The Polytechnic, which is a
government sector establishment of the government of Kerala, was
established in 1980, with Shri. Ramachandra Pisharady
as its first principal. Under his able leadership and guidance the
polytechnic started with 3 main branches of study, namely Technical
with specialization of foundry technology, Power electronics and
Instrument technology.

Apart from this civil Engineering
branch and Computer hardware maintenance course started in 1985 and
1990 respectively the college offers part time courses in
mechanical, civil and electronics for people employed in industries.
The polytechnic college is located in
an area of 68 acres, about 6 kms from Palakkad on the
Palakkad – Pollachi road. The college has proximity to a large
number of large and medium scale industries.
Community Development Through Polytechnic Scheme.
The Institution was selected as a
community polytechnic in 1991-1992 with the purpose of
developing a regular interaction between the community and the
technicians of the polytechnic. As part of this programme, the
facilities and manpower provide construction assistance to fulfill
the needs of the community.
Yeoman service is provided
through 5 extensive centers of the community polytechnic scheme.
The activities include developing manpower and imparting technical
knowledge and know-how in the fields of tailoring, food processing,
and beauty care auto electrical works, cane cultivation in crafts
and other vocational fields.
Under TRYSEM the youth
belonging to the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes are trained
for self-employment in furniture manufacturing, pc software, repair
of electrical household appliances, radio and TV repairing etc.,
This is being done as a special control assistance to the special
component plan under SCA to SCP scheme. It was
initiated in 1988-89.

Continuing Education Cell
The
Continuing Education Cell of the polytechnic was started in
June 1996. A strong impetus was given to the cell when it
was brought under the Canada-India Institutional Co-operation
project in Jan 1997. The areas of activities of
